Module 5

Summary: Chapter 12, 14, and 15 were extremely detailed and I had to reread many portions of these chapters. Chapter 12 primarily discusses motivation, beliefs, and goals about learning in general. Chapter 14 discusses research behind teaching practices as well as different approaches. Chapter 15 discusses the different assessment types and grading practices.  Reflection: Personally, I struggled with having to take a side in the extrinsic/ extrinsic debate for my research paper. I see value in both types of motivation in different areas of education. I almost feel that a balance is needed between external rewards and the intrinsic motivation to accomplish things. The researched practices on differentiation and Blooms Taxonomy were interesting and it really made me reflect on my own learning experience as a student. I do not remember having to answer questions with as much depth and I absolutely do not remember much differentiation occurring as most of my teachers taught to the enti...

Module 4

Summary: Chapter 9, 10, and 11 focus on different learning styles. Chapter 9 discusses Metacognition, learning strategies, and problem solving. Additionally, transfer is discussed as well as critical thinking and teaching for complex knowledge. In chapter 10, the author focuses primarily on cognitive and social constructivism. Additionally collaboration and cooperation, styles were discussed. Reflection: I liked the activity of creating a concept map because It helped organize the key concepts of the chapter in a visual way. I thought the different cooperative learning styles were interesting.  I liked the jigsaw activity the most. I also thought it was interesting the way you assign roles in group work. For example I liked the idea of having the coach, taskmaster and checker. I think by assigning specific roles, it provides an opportunity for all students to be engaged.

Module 3

Summary: Chapter 7 and 13 focus on classroom management, behavior management, and overall the classroom environment. There was a lot of discussion how teachers can use behavior analysis to support positive reinforcement. Identifying triggers or antecedents to help support students in adjusting to support themselves with self-management. There was a large focus on positive and negative reinforcement and large group and individual reward systems. The classroom management discussion was much about knowing your philosophy in order to manage the environment in your classroom. The importance of setting structure and routines at the beginning of the school year was evident based on the discussions. It seems like its important to have a solid understanding of your own environment expectations before you begin to set up classroom expectations and rules.  Reflection:  I found myself thinking about myself as a coach and how I set the tone for my team each year. I do have an unwritt...

Module 2

Summary:  Chapters 4, 5, and 6 cover the learning styles, intelligence, language development and culture of students. All of these topics are discussed in detail to basically show how they are all relevant to how a student is perceived, learns, and performs in school. These chapters to me identify the many variables that surround each student including the obvious things that are seen with your eyes like race, gender, and physical attributes. It then goes deeper to discuss abilities and disabilities which may not be seen but witnessed and also things that may be more identified after listening to another student. The way they speak for example. If they have a speech impairment, or an accent due to language. Also, they way they express their opinions. All of these variables are discussed as ultimately impacting a students ability or perceived ability to achieve in school.  Reflection:  To be honest I was extremely frustrated with the intelligence test. I didn't like ...

Module 1

Eric Welsh   Module 1: Chapters 1,2,&3 Summary: In Chapters 1,2, and 3 of Anita Woolfolk book titled, Educational Psychology, the author reviews foundational education perspective. Specifically, the author discusses different perspectives on teaching and learning. There is much discussion surrounding what is good teaching and how teachers connect with kids to make and impact. Additionally, there is a lot of discussion surrounding specific theorists and self, social, and moral development.  Reflection:  Most of what I read I compared to my current profession of being a baseball instructor. Although I haven't formally completed my teaching degree, I have been running a successful business for the past twenty years utilizing teaching practices. I guess if I wasn't good at teaching, I would not have paying clients requesting me to work with their kids. Some of the correlational data collection is interesting to me and I sometimes wonder how I can collect data that could b...
