Module 5

Summary: Chapter 12, 14, and 15 were extremely detailed and I had to reread many portions of these chapters. Chapter 12 primarily discusses motivation, beliefs, and goals about learning in general. Chapter 14 discusses research behind teaching practices as well as different approaches. Chapter 15 discusses the different assessment types and grading practices.

Reflection: Personally, I struggled with having to take a side in the extrinsic/ extrinsic debate for my research paper. I see value in both types of motivation in different areas of education. I almost feel that a balance is needed between external rewards and the intrinsic motivation to accomplish things. The researched practices on differentiation and Blooms Taxonomy were interesting and it really made me reflect on my own learning experience as a student. I do not remember having to answer questions with as much depth and I absolutely do not remember much differentiation occurring as most of my teachers taught to the entire class. I am sure looking back that each teacher made some accommodations and had differentiated expectations, but I do think education and the delivery of instruction has changed since I was a student 25 years ago. The testing chapter was the most difficult for me to organize. There are many ways to view the assessments and the results. The figure 15.4 on page 620 was probably the most helpful visual for me. This helped me see the comparison of each assessment type.
